Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram is a town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is around 60 km south from the city of Chennai has a beautiful beach spanning a distance of over 20 km. Today’s Mamallapuram is purely a tourist town and one of the major attractions around Chennai. The East Coast Road has made it easily accessible  just about an hour from the city. Once the site of the erstwhile Pallava Kingdom’s seaport, the place today abounds with stone carvings, caves, rock-cut temples also attract tourists. Mamallapuram dates back to the Tamil Pallava dynasty in the 7th-9th century. The structures here, mostly carved straight out of granite, are among the oldest existing examples of Dravidian (South Indian) architecture.

Mahabalipuram was the earlier name of Mamallapuram because the demon king Mahabali was killed by Lord Vishnu. During the reign of King Narasimha Varman I, the name Mahabalipuram was changed. It was renamed mahabalipuram which is called till now. There is a story behind. The name Mamallpuram king Narasimha Varman I was a great and valiant warrior. He was given the title Mamalla which means ‘the great wrestler’ so the name was converted from Mamallapuram to mahabalipuram considering the great king and his achievements who has got the title of Mamalla the great wrestler.

Mamallapuram’s wonders in rock leave visitors enthralled, conveying as they do, an impression of beauty and harmony. The monuments are floodlit at night and so it is possible to enjoy their beauty even after sunset. The Mamallapuram dance festival is conducted every year during Dec-Jan. It is a month long festival and dances take place during the weekends. Classical dances such as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Mohini Attam, Odissi, Kathak etc., are performed by well-known exponents of the art.


Kanyakumari formerly known as Cape Comorin is a town in Kanyakumari District in the state ofTamil Nadu in India. Cape Comorin is the southern tip of the Cardamom Hills, an extension of the Western Ghats range along the west coast of India. Kanyakumari also spelled Kanniyakumari or Kanniakumari District is the southernmost point of the Indian Peninsula. This is a popular tourist place in India. The district has the best literacy rate in the state and is considered the best educated district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu by the HRD Ministry.

The rich history and the cultural heritage of Kanyakumari is one of mixed culture and profound heritage. The city of Kanyakumari have been around for thousands of years as it has been the city of culture, history, arts, economy and the hub of civilization for centuries. The memorial statue of Thiruvalluvar is in Kanyakumari. The pedestal of the statue is of 38 feet height and the statue over it is 95 feet tall with a grand total of 133 feet for the entire sculpture. Many temples, churches, religious pillars and statues are situated in Kanyakumari. It is a place of mixed culture that is reflected in the arts, buildings and even in the food.

Catherine falls

Catherine falls is a double-cascaded waterfall located in Kotagiri(near Coonor), The Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu .The falls is named after of M.D.Cocburn who was pioneer coffee planter in Kotagiri and yercaud.The native name of the Catherine Falls is Geddhehaada Halla, meaning “Foothills Dale River”. It can clearly been seen from the top of Dolphin’s Nose if seeing the entire waterfall as one total impression is what you are looking for. It is also possible to take a road to the top of the falls. It is also a major tourist spot in Kotagiri.

Catherine Falls is one of the beautiful tourist locations in the region that features a stream of water falling from an altitude of 250 ft. Known as St. Catherine’s Falls, the waterfall is located in the outskirts of the town. The Falls are at a distance of 7 km from Kotagiri and consists of an upper and a lower fall. The upper fall, which is the second highest in the Nilgiris, takes a leap of about 250 feet. From above the falls, one can see the magnificent view of Dolphin’s Nose and the surrounding country.
